Brief History -- Magpie was the second of five children born to Cassius and Naomi Amell, a reasonably wealthy couple residing on Persephone. Her siblings were her older brother William, her twin brother Emrys, and her younger sisters Alina and Clara. They lived in quiet contentment for many years; her father's political job and her mother's social graces kept the family well-off and well-liked by the community. They had little want for anything. However, their lifestyle quickly changed after it was revealed that her father had had dealings with some of the smugglers set up in the Eavesdown Docks. He was fired and, shunned and humiliated, the family was forced to move from their posh, upstate home to the slums.
The family spent years after that just keeping their heads down and trying to avoid any more conflict. For the most part, they succeeded; even the civil war that began to brew had little effect on the family. Yet living in squalor still took its toll on her family. Sickness came often due to the malnutrition and low levels of hygiene, and with sickness came death. At the age of thirteen a plague claimed her younger sister Alina, and at fifteen her mother was gone as well. William, four years her senior, left to go fight for the Alliance after their mother's death.
A year later she and Emrys also left after finding work on one of the ships in the docks. This ship was the Zenith. It was a small ship that took whatever jobs it could, illegal jobs more often than not. It was here that Magpie earned her nickname. Her captain, Leo, gave it to her stating that her love of shiny objects and penchant for stealing things reminded him of a magpie. Despite her initial attempts to shake it off, the nickname stuck, and she has gone by it ever since.
Two years after joining the crew, Magpie left the ship to fight in the civil war with the Independents. She didn't leave alone. Leo, an avid supporter of the Browncoats, came with her to assist in what seemed to be the increasingly impossible task of defeating the Alliance. The two were separated early on in the fighting. Leo, a far more experienced and skilled soldier than her, was needed elsewhere. She was sent to training. However, it wasn't long before she saw battle. She fought in the Battle of Du-Khang, making it out with only a few minor injuries, and participated in several smaller clashes before the end of the war. Her last taste of combat came at the Battle of Serenity Valley. She considers herself lucky to have made it out Serenity Valley at all.
Since the end of the war Magpie has spent most of her time going from one outer planet to another looking for work. Nowadays most of her time is spent working as a thief or mercenary for anyone willing to hire her. For her, all that matters now is staying alive.

General -- Magpie has always been a person whose exact personality is quite difficult to pin down. Certain aspects of her character will always remain the same, yet most seem to vary with her mood and the day. She is the type of person who could be seen one day picking fights for almost no reason and the next volunteering in a shelter. She takes pleasure in confusing others and keeping everyone on their toes. In her mind, it's always fun to be unpredictable.
Still, there are some traits that she is known well for: primarily her arrogant nature and sharp, and quite often sarcastic, wit. Magpie has a tendency to carry herself with a slight air of superiority and often believes herself to be capable of far more than she truly is. She is quite a prideful person and does not take insults or humiliation well. Anyone who tries to embarrass her is certain to be met with either a stream of ridicule or a fist to the face.
Magpie doesn't typically act in a way that most would describe as being moral, which isn't exactly shocking for someone who chooses to work as a thief and a mercenary. She prefers to just do whatever she wants and whatever she believes is necessary. For the most part, she is an 'ends justify the means' type of person. Still, she is not completely devoid of principles. She does try her best to avoid wronging innocents unless she believes that she has no other choice. However, she has no sympathy for the rich of the world and will often go out of her way to annoy or trouble them.
Weaknesses -- Aggressive, blunt, secretive, sarcastic, stubborn
Strengths -- Intelligent, brave, accepting, loyal, creative

“Do you understand the seriousness of the orders been given to you?” Ramiel’s voice was quiet but stern as he spoke to the assemblage of angels standing before him. His somber grey eyes addressed each angel in turn, most likely looking for any sign of defiance that any one of them would dare show in the light of their latest commands. “We can have no mistakes. No altercations. No heroes.” His gaze shifted after his last word as he turned to stare down the youngest soldier in their midst. That means you, Castiel. His glare left no doubt in the younger angel’s mind about what his superior wished to say. Don’t you dare screw this up.
Castiel straightened his back infinitesimally; his attempt to look determined and unfazed despite the small ball of disquiet that had formed deep inside his chest. I am an angel of the Lord. He told himself. I have served my father faithfully for over two millennia. I will not allow another’s skepticism to prevent me from doing my duty. He met the elder’s stare head on. I am an angel of the Lord.
Whatever Ramiel saw in his eyes must have satisfied him, as the older angel’s eyes shifted back to their original position: addressing the motley crew of soldiers that had been placed in his charge.
“I do not need to tell you what failure could mean. It is imperative that we save the Righteous Man before the first seal can be broken.”
It was true; he didn’t need to tell them. All angels were born (or created as some would say) with the knowledge of the scripture already burned into their minds. All there already knew the story of Lucifer and his fall, even if they hadn’t been there to witness it themselves. All there already knew the gravity of the task that had been given to them. All there already knew what it meant for the future –both their future and the human’s– if they failed.
“Do you understand?”
Each angel nodded their affirmation in unison. They knew the task that had been given.
“Good. We leave tonight.”
