RIVER TAM
AGE: Seventeen
GENDER: Female
NICKNAMES: Meimei (by most of the crew), little witch, little albatross
MEMBER GROUP: Serenity Crew
BRIEF HISTORY:
River was born on Osiris, December of 2500 to Gabriel and Regan Tam, ten years after her older brother Simon Tam was born. River was extremely gifted from a young age, learning to read before she was even a year old. By the time she was three she was correcting Simon’s spelling. River was always surrounded by new things to learn and do, but it was Simon who was always there. It had nothing to do with Regan and Gabriel not loving their children but the parents didn’t always know what to do with the two geniuses. River went through school after school completing every program offered to her, yet she still thirsted for knowledge. She was also gifted with a strong intuition before she would discover the academy. River was always able to tell early on what girls her brother liked and would pick on him for it. River would be fourteen and in a graduate program for physics when she finally found something that excited her.
She found the Alliance Academy, a place that was said to be a private school to nurture the most academically gifted students. River would beg to go and her parents and Simon, though they never heard of the school, let River go because the program didn’t bore her to tears. Unknown to them at the time the Alliance Academy was experimenting on their students. They weren’t nurturing the most gifted students they were turning them into assassins and a few into psychics. Extensively experimented on River was put through several unnecessary surgeries that damaged her amygdale. River also started a slow descent into insanity, but managed to get a coded letter out to Simon. Unknown to River until she would see Simon later on was that he gave up everything to find her.
Simon would infiltrate the facility and masquerade as an inspector and then after he had rescued her, an orderly. River would follow him willingly and though she spoke to him plenty it didn’t make a lot of sense. Simon would have River go into cryo and River would be transported onto another ship. Simon found them Serenity while it was on Persephone at the Eavesdown docks paying Kaylee for passage without ever talking to the captain. River would be awoken from her cryo sleep early only for Serenity’s crew to end up in a world of trouble. An alliance operative named Dobson had found Simon and River. After this incident Simon and River stay aboard Serenity. River’s mental state doesn’t improve much but despite everything she seems more at home on Serenity than she had anywhere else. During her time on Serenity, River becomes friends with Kaylee, Book, and most of the crew with the exception of Jayne. When she is lucid River is sweet and friendly with everyone but then out of nowhere she would do something unexpected such as cut Jayne with a knife. River even hit the point where she made a plot to get Serenity and her crew away from a bounty hunter named Jubal Early.
FACE CLAIM: Summer Glau
EYE COLOR: Brown
HAIR COLOR: Dark Brown almost black
OTHER FEATURES: Mousy features, big eyes, pale skin
GENERAL: River when lucid is calm, normal, quite pleasant, sweet and nice. She gets along well with almost everyone on the crew. She seems almost happy in her lucid moments, playing games, getting in on jokes, and outsmarting her brother, Simon. When she is having a bad day she is often odd, makes inappropriate comments, and throws temper tantrums. These behaviors often are the lesser problems caused by her mental instability. River has been known to commit dangerous acts and be a threat to everyone around her. This is made worse knowing that if River wanted to actively harm someone her unparalleled genius and skill there would be few people who would have been able to stop her. River’s amygdale, the filter for emotions, had been stripped. In most people this would cause an absence of fear, but in River’s case it prevents her control over her emotions even if she wants to. Add the fact that she’s psychic onto this and actively reads thoughts, and feels all emotions her condition only worsens.
River is deeply intuitive and relies on feelings rather than knowledge. She prefers to see things in a logical way, and given her genius capabilities she is very capable of being logical when not overwhelmed. River communicates in a lyrical way with cryptic metaphors and never simple with a few exceptions here and there. These exceptions are usually directed at Simon. Despite everything that River has been through her genius and mental abilities are largely intact.
WEAKNESSES: River can’t filter emotions hers or others, She is insane, she often doesn’t make sense until after something happens, she is sometimes dangerous to others on the ship, she is a borderline paranoid schizophrenic
STRENGTHS: River is an unparalleled genius, she has some latent psychic abilities, she loves to dance, she is good in combat (when not in a bout of psychosis)
RP SAMPLE
Rynn sensed the movement behind her before she heard the voice, the movement behind her made her jumpy in away because this planet was weird. Much how Nizar and Rathus felt about Earth, this planet was impossible. It was too neat and organized, like nothing had ever gone wrong here. Rynn was born on Earth, she didn't know what her family's home planet was like. She was like many of the people her age though, they were no longer immigrants to Earth. They were born their, they'd lived their whole lives there. Rynn was a child when her parents told her about their home world. The world she should have grown up on had it not been a dying system. But it had been a dying system and they were taken to earth. Her parents Ket and Julluh had struggled on Earth, they were not looked at as equals. Rynn though when she was following the rules was considered an equal to the humans. This was what she didn't understand was how one generation and a terraforming disaster suddenly made the world more friendly to them.
Rynn got back to the task at hand which was to defend herself. She reached down into her boot and pulled out the butter knife she stole. A butter knife was not the most effective weapon, but Rynn had used it as one once before she met Sukar. Before he had saved her from the world of being a sex slave, of being a toy for whoever had the money to pay for her. Rynn had stabbed a guy in the gut with a butter knife, which resulted in her being chained and drugged more often than not. Rynn knew how to use a butter knife to do some damage, which was why she stole it. She didn't have any plans on using it on anyone who didn't deserve it because it was a painful slow, and hard way to die. She knew it would work though and a machete was too over the top for the situation. And a butter knife wasn't quite a threat unless the person knew her well enough to know she could do damage.
At the same time she was sensing her mate, she was sensing Sukar. But she had no idea why that would be at the moment. She wanted to see him again though, she wanted to feel the strength of his arms around her. Rynn wanted the familiar scents of Sukar, the smell of the badlands, the fuel from the rollers, the scent of leather and fur from his clothing, the faint scent of blood, gun powder and metal. Rynn wanted all of these things again, plus the sound of his heart beat beating against her ear, and the sound of him breathing. Rynn had so many things that she was missing of him right now. His voice, his scent, his touch, his smell and his protection, Rynn relied on Sukar for many things still because essentially she was still a child. She had no idea that the sense of someone behind her and the sense of Sukar were two very related things at the moment.
Keeping the butter knife in hand waiting for the sounds to grow closer to her get within stabbing range she was posed for attack. Her wild dread locks going everywhere at the moment just as they always had. Just as they had when she was a child although when she was younger they were much more controlled than they were now. She’d never take them out though because her mother had done them for her. Just months before she had died, months before Bowen and Taggart had taken her small world and destroyed it for what guanalite mines that were on their land. The presence was now close enough for her to stab but before she had a chance to turn around and stab, the words came out of his mouth. Heavily accented if you asked the humans but his voice sounded normal to her. She’d know that voice anywhere. Rynn stuck the knife back into her boot before turning and pouncing on him her arms wrapping her way around his neck and her legs around his waist. Rynn pressed her face against him breathing in deeply all the scents about him that she missed about him. Rynn loved the way his voice sounded the familiar feeling of being pressed up against him, and the way he looked and smelled.
He’d been the one to gain her trust, he was the one who slept basically on top of her at night because it made her feel safe. He taught her to shoot even though the ammo for guns was expensive and hard to come by without some major negotiations with people. He also taught her more English, picking up where Julluh and Ket had left off. ”You are here, but the letter I received said you were in the great sleep, Nizar and Rathus sent the letter” Rynn replied to him in their native tongue of L’Irathi, nuzzling her face against his unwilling to let go of him for the moment. Unwilling to let her mate be left behind because of her mistakes, because of her anger. Rynn had Sukar back and she wasn’t letting go anytime soon if ever.
