After the Scarlet Witch lost it, warping reality in the process and creating a new composite world, the proverbial %@#% hit the fan when a powerful terrorist named Tempus launched simultaneous attacks on New York and San Francisco. With a bit of cunning mental manipulation she pitted Captain America, Spider-Man, Iceman and Flux against civilians and policemen alike. In the end what had been heroes ended up committing multiple counts of manslaughter, tarnishing both their credibility and society's faith in supposed heroes.
Realizing the heroes were duped, Captain America and the others were put on probation, and S.H.I.E.L.D. made it their priority to locate and neutralize Tempus and her band of murderous Acolytes. Genosha and several Southeastern African nations are freed from years of oppression in the span of a fortnight, and their liberator, sets a small band of mutant villains on the Capitol Building, bringing the majority of it crashing down upon Congress despite the best efforts of the Avengers to stop them. In the wake of so many deaths, the Super Powers Registration Act and Proposition X find new traction and are almost assured of being passed as soon as emergency elections are completed to shore up the devastated membership of Congress.
Both the X-Men and S.H.I.E.L.D. meet with costly defeats, the one at the hands of Tempus and her Acolytes and the others, upon delving into the depths of the Weapon Plus facility wherein Tempus has garnered a recent recruit. Meanwhile, a secretive organization (Hydra) has set its sights on both S.H.I.E.L.D. and Xendra Stark, as the Mandarin and other agents unleash a series of sorties aimed at undermining and destroying both.
Briefly New York is besieged by dragons and only to disappear just as suddenly after a brief engagement with at least three would-be heroes. In the wake of their defeat, the X-Men and Gen-X programs separate from the Xavier Institute, sending the mutant student body to Massachusetts, and maintaining their base in Westchester, since Tempus is already aware of it. Professor Charles Xavier enters the fray as a member of the X-Men, alongside Cyclops, Jean Grey, Colossus and others. So there seems to be hope...
But Tempus is still out there, and worse still; has coerced young Bobby Drake into joining her Acolytes. At the same time, aliens have recently been repelled by the Avengers, among them the dreaded Skrulls. And in addition to Exodus, and whatever machinations he has in mind, Hydra is out there, sinking its claws into everything and everyone who might prove to be of use to them...
The old expression, ‘May you live in interesting times.’ has never been more fitting. Come leave your mark on a world in turmoil!
